JOB SUMMARY:

Afghan Support Network (ASN) is seeking a Volunteer Coordinator to help lead and strengthen its volunteer program in support of Afghan refugees, immigrants, and underserved households & community in the Portland Metropolitan area, Oregon and SW Washington. Reporting to the Development Director, the Volunteer Coordinator will help recruit, organize, support volunteers, manage volunteer engagement, and ensure that volunteers are effectively contributing to community engagement, fundraising, and programmatic success, while contributing to ASN’s community-focused programs and operations. The role calls for strong interpersonal and organizational skills, the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and fluency in English, with Dari and/or Pashto preferred. A valid driver’s license and background check are also required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and implement a consistent and effective volunteer program to support ASN’s mission and fundraising activities.
  • Recruit, screen, onboard, and engage volunteers aligned with program and organizational needs.
  • Coordinate volunteer training, assignments, and ongoing support to ensure strong engagement and retention.
  • Build partnerships with community organizations, universities, and volunteer networks to expand recruitment.
  • Support volunteer involvement across programs, events, and fundraising initiatives.
  • Organize and coordinate volunteer engagement activities, including recognition events and appreciation efforts.
  • Maintain regular communication with volunteers, including updates, feedback, and recognition.
  • Support the development and distribution of monthly newsletters and email campaigns.
  • Track volunteer participation and support reporting on engagement and impact.
  •  Plan and oversee community engagement events, such as donation drives and educational workshops, ensuring collaboration between ASN staff and volunteers to achieve event goals.
  • Represent ASN professionally and support cross-departmental initiatives as needed.
  • Perform other related programmatic duties as assigned.
 

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in volunteer coordination, community engagement, or nonprofit work (preferred).
  • Experience in coordinating with multiple staff leaders over various functional areas.
  • Detail-oriented with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong leadership/management skills with the ability to motivate volunteers.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated proactive approaches to problem-solving with strong decision-making capability
  • Highly resourceful team-player, with the ability to also be extremely effective independently
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve high performance goals and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Proactive, resourceful, and able to work independently.
  • English required. Demonstrated fluency in a second language from Afghanistan preferred: Dari and/or Pashto.
  • Valid Driver’s License and safe driving record required
  • Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation.
