"When I started, the business was slow. We had to deliver everything ourselves and worked tirelessly with no staff, just me doing all the hard work. It wasn’t easy, but I had a vision to grow and get somewhere."

Bridging Communities: The Role of the Afghan Support Network (ASN)

The Afghan Support Network (ASN) has played a critical role in the success of Fabric for Less.  ASN has been a major supporter of Fabric for Less, introducing the business to many clients in the Afghan community. Through its resettlement work, ASN sourced rugs from Fabric for Less for newly arrived Afghan families, ensuring they had quality home essentials while also supporting a community-owned business. This partnership not only provided direct business for Hamid but also boosted awareness about his store within the Afghan community.

Word-of-mouth promotion, fueled by ASN’s support, further strengthened the business. Many Afghan families, hearing about the quality and affordability of Hamid’s products, became loyal customers. Over time, Fabric for Less has become a go-to store for Afghan households, especially for traditional rugs, clothing, and household ornaments.

The Afghan community in Oregon has been a strong backbone for the business, but Hamid’s reach goes beyond just his Afghan clientele. His store has become a welcoming space for immigrants from various backgrounds, including Indian, Pakistani, Middle Eastern, and Asian communities. American and Mexican customers also frequent Fabric for Less, appreciating its diverse selection and cultural authenticity. Hamid’s efforts to cater to a wide array of customers while maintaining his cultural roots have helped make Fabric for Less a hub where culture and commerce thrive.

“We as a business are now part of the Oregon community, and we are proud to serve Oregonians!!!” Hamid shares, reflecting on the business’s integration into the broader community. By bridging cultural divides and offering quality products that resonate with different groups, Fabric for Less has cemented its place as an essential part of Oregon’s multicultural fabric.

Future Plans & Vision for Growth

Hamid’s vision for Fabric for Less is rooted in serving the community and expanding its reach. He plans to introduce more cultural items that resonate with the Afghan community and beyond. Reflecting on his journey, Hamid offers words of wisdom to aspiring Afghan entrepreneurs: “First, study and learn the English language. Start small, work hard—very hard—and you’ll make it one day.”
