A Story of Strength and Survival
Tajuddin Luddin’s journey to the United States is a testament to his determination and courage. On August 19, 2021, amid the chaos of the Afghan evacuation, Tajuddin was fortunate to leave Kabul. “The journey was treacherous; we were packed like cargo, but we are thankful to the US armed forces in getting us out of harm’s way to safety. From Kabul to Qatar, then to Germany, and finally Virginia, each stop tested our resolve,” he recalls. After weeks of hardship, he reached Fort Pickett military base, where he stayed for three months before relocating to Portland, Oregon.
Yet, the challenges were far from over. Adjusting to a new country, Tajuddin faced difficulties securing housing and basic support. His path crossed with Afghan Support Network (ASN) at a critical moment. “When I arrived in Portland, resettlement agencies were nowhere to be found. Yahya, who was volunteering then, came to my rescue. I stayed in temporary housing arranged through their referral, I had nowhere else to go,” he shares.
Building a New Life with ASN’s Support
ASN’s founding member’s early services became a lifeline for Tajuddin during his early days in Oregon. From cultural welcome kits to food packages delivered for an entire year, ASN ensured Tajuddin’s immediate needs were met. “ASN’s founding members went beyond just assistance; they gave me a sense of belonging,” he emphasizes.
Tajuddin also received crucial referrals by ASN for legal support, resulting in his asylum approval. He also got connected to the resources for his Family Reunification case, which was successfully processed. “My family’s case is approved, and I am now waiting for their visas.”he adds, also he wishes that ASN’s had established their legal services navigation team sooner, which would have benefited many Afghan families navigating legal system in the US. He still praises the success and great work ASN has done through its case management services, health and life navigation support and many other cornerstone services provided to the community.
In addition to case management, Tajuddin found community through ASN events, such as Eid celebrations, cultural gatherings, and concerts. These activities helped bridge the cultural gap and provided emotional support during a challenging transition.
Contributing to the Community
Driven by his difficult experiences, Tajuddin was determined to give back. “I walked for hours in the rain one night, lost after work. That experience made me want to help others so they wouldn’t suffer like I did,” he explains. Tajuddin connected new Afghan arrivals to resources, assisted with transportation, and organized small community gatherings and social circles to help the new arrival Afghan connect with resources.
His contributions culminated in a cultural showcase event in 2023, where he represented Afghan heritage with pride. “ASN supported me with cultural items so I could participate. It was a moment of pride to share my roots with the broader community.”
A Vision for the Future
Tajuddin’s hard work and dedication continue to pave the way for his success. With 15 years of painting experience, he is now focused on building his career as a professional painter. “I worked on commercial projects, including houses for some community members,” he notes. ASN’s Career Coaching and Education Services have guided him toward obtaining a painting license through Portland Community College’s vocational training program.
Looking ahead, Tajuddin dreams of establishing his own painting business while also opening a restaurant to celebrate Afghan cuisine. “There are limited Afghan restaurants here, and I hope to change that someday,” he shares.

Tajuddin Luddin’s story reflects resilience, community, and hope. His journey from uncertainty to contribution embodies the values that the Afghan Support Network strives to uphold—providing a foundation for individuals to rebuild and thrive.

After years of waiting, Tajuddin’s long-held dream becomes reality as his wife and children arrive in the United States in the first week of January 2025. Overwhelmed with joy, he describes the moment as feeling on top of the world. With his family finally by his side, the new year marks not just the start of another chapter, but a fresh beginning in his journey of hope and resilience in the U.S.
