Afghan Support Network

A Stronger, Healthier, and More Empowered Community

From January to June 2025, the Afghan Support Network (ASN) delivered 15,300+ service touchpoints to 856 unique clients, offering comprehensive and culturally tailored services to Afghan-American and broader immigrant communities across Oregon.

Housing Assistance & Support Services:

338 households received vital assistance through ASN’s Housing Navigation and Rental Support programs, totaling over $653,982 in rental assistance & housing support ($109,053 in direct “rental-assistance” support & $544,929 in referral-based rental assistance). These efforts ensured safe and stable living environments for families facing uncertainty.

Employment & Career-Mentoring (Economic Empowerment):

With 1,164 employment service touches helping 237 individual community members (each representing an Afghan-American household residing in Pacific Northwest), with 79 successful job placements, ASN helped community members gain financial stability, self-sufficiency, and dignity in the workforce.

Healthcare Access:

ASN’s Healthcare Navigators & Community Engagement team supported nearly 800 clients, helping them access Oregon Health Plan (OHP), mental health services, and medical appointments with dignity and language support.

Education & ESOL:

ASN’s Education Program served 450 students across youth and adult education programs, with 5,423 education touches, including our Saturday School with over 60 students attending Dari, Pashto, Tarbiya and Quran/Religion classes weekly held at Afghan-Home under ASN’s Youth Program. Our English (ESOL) classes are serving over 113 students, delivered through 64 monthly classes,  combining both in-person and online (virtual) formats.
Driver-Ed (Education): Through 1,470 driver education services, ASN’s Driver-Ed (education) program has served up to 250 clients who received DMV support, permit training, and behind-the-wheel driving preparation & training, which are critical steps toward mobility and independence. Our Driver-Ed program has been very vital in helping female community members with getting their driving license and getting mobility independence for the first time in their lives. Our behind-the-wheel driving classes and sessions were extended to Salem community members since May & June of 2025 with amazing feedback from community members who are both excited and very happy for the services.
Our Doctor Recertification Program has been another cornerstone initiative with more than 8 doctors, one of the participants passed his USMLE step-1 exam in July of 2025. Three (3) other participants are scheduled for exams in August and September of 2025, which are on their journey to starting their career in medical field in the USA.

Legal & Immigration Support:

Over 620 Legal & Immigration Support Services were provided to 182 clients, offering crucial support for asylum seekers, evacuees, and families navigating complex immigration pathways through ASN’s Legal & Immigration Services navigator and through referrals to our partner agencies and organizations.

Wraparound Case Management:

1,924 Case Management services were delivered to 682 individuals and families, connecting them with resources such as essential goods, transportation assistance, cultural navigation services, and also developing life navigation plans for them during their formative days in the USA. In addition to this, in response to the freezing of federal resettlement funds, ASN launched a collaborative effort to resettle more than 20 Afghan families in Oregon. So far, fifteen (15) families have successfully been resettled in the greater Portland Metro area and ASN provided wraparound Case Management services for these households.

Cultural Programs & Events:

ASN hosted multiple community gatherings, from Annual Women’s & Mother’s Day Celebrations, Iftar GatheringsEid Celebrations, Advocacy & Know Your Rights Clinics, to Youth Leadership Workshops and Health & Wellness Seminars,  engaging over 3,180 participants in activities that nourish community connection and cultural pride.

Expanding Reach in Salem:

In 2025, ASN officially launched its HRSN (Health-Related Social Needs) Program in Salem, supporting 25+ households with services like housing, nutrition, benefits navigation, and care coordination, marking the beginning of statewide service expansion. This is on top of our ongoing wraparound services provision in Salem and the community has been very welcoming and supportive for our initiatives.

What’s Ahead

As we move into the second half of 2025, ASN is scaling up new initiatives across Youth Leadership, Early Childhood Learning, Cultural & Sports Programming, and Digital Literacy, ensuring Afghan-American families and communities across Oregon continue to thrive with dignity and support. The work continues as we aim to empower and uplift the Afghan community through these meaningful programs and services!
