The Afghan Support Network is the first culturally specific nonprofit organization that has been formed to target the needs of Afghan refugees and the Afghan-American community in the greater Portland area, Oregon & Southwest Washington.

JOB SUMMARY:

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Instructor will be instrumental in empowering Afghan community members with English language skills to improve communication, secure employment, and navigate life in American society. This position involves designing engaging and culturally responsive lesson plans, teaching students with varying proficiency levels, and fostering an inclusive learning environment that promotes community integration and cross-cultural understanding.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Design and deliver tailored English language lessons addressing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills for diverse proficiency levels.
• Develop and adapt curriculum materials to align with students’ goals, ensuring they meet the practical needs of daily life and employment.
• Provide high-quality instruction in both online and offline settings, using virtual platforms effectively and ensuring seamless transitions between the two modes.
• Conduct assessments to monitor student progress and adjust teaching strategies accordingly.
• Create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that respects the cultural background of students.
• Collaborate with other program staff to integrate English learning with other community services.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, Linguistics, or a related field preferred.
• Proven experience teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) or related subjects.
• Proficiency in utilizing online teaching tools and platforms to deliver engaging virtual instruction.
• Understanding of the linguistic and cultural needs of Afghan or immigrant communities.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an emphasis on patience, adaptability, and cultural sensitivity.
• Proficiency in Dari or Pashto is a plus.
