A Stronger, Healthier, and More Empowered Community
During the third quarter (Q3) of 2025 (July, August, September), the Afghan Support Network (ASN) continued expanding its impact, reaching 661 unique clients through over 9,671 service touchpoints across Oregon and SW Washington, reinforcing our mission to empower, uplift, and serve Afghan and immigrant families through culturally grounded programs.
Housing Assistance & Support Services:
ASN’s Housing Navigation & Rental Assistance Program supported 150 households, providing $190,767 in rental assistance & housing support ($112,937 in direct “rental-assistance” support & $77,830 in referral-based rental assistance and utility assistance). These services helped families overcome financial barriers and maintain long-term housing stability while navigating Oregon’s & SW Washington’s growing housing challenges, especially for the households facing housing instability & uncertainty.
Employment & Career-Mentoring (Economic Empowerment):
Through Career Coaching & Employment Navigation, ASN served 262 job seekers, facilitating 14 successful job placements. Our Job & Resource Fair 2025 connected over 200 community members with 20+ employers and partners, strengthening pathways to sustainable employment and workforce integration. Through our Employment department, we have been helping the community members gain financial stability, self-sufficiency, and dignity in the workforce.
Healthcare Access:
ASN’s Healthcare Navigators & Community Engagement team supported nearly 77 clients with over 300 service touchpoints, helping them access Oregon Health Plan (OHP), mental health services, and medical appointments with dignity and language support.
Education & ESOL:
ASN’s Education Program served 488 students across youth and adult education programs, with 5,461 education touches, including our Saturday School with over 60 students attending Dari, Pashto, Tarbiya and Quran/Religion classes weekly held at Afghan-Home under ASN’s Youth Program. Our English (ESOL) classes are serving over 117 students, delivered through 64 monthly classes, combining both in-person and online (virtual) formats.
Driver-Ed (Education): Through 573 driver education services, ASN’s Driver-Ed (education) program has served up to 129 unique clients who received DMV support, permit training, and behind-the-wheel driving preparation & training, which are critical steps toward mobility and independence. Our Driver-Ed program has been very vital in helping female community members with getting their driving license and getting mobility independence for the first time in their lives. Our behind-the-wheel driving classes and sessions were extended to Salem community members since May & June of 2025 with amazing feedback from community members who are both excited and very happy for the services.
Our Doctor Recertification Program has been another cornerstone initiative with more than 8 doctors, one of the participants passed his USMLE step-1 exam in July of 2025. Three (3) other participants are scheduled for exams in August and September of 2025, which are on their journey to starting their career in medical field in the USA.
Legal & Immigration Support:
Over 259 Legal & Immigration Support Services were provided to 150 clients, offering crucial support for asylum seekers, evacuees, and families navigating complex immigration pathways through ASN’s Legal & Immigration Services navigator and through referrals to our partner agencies and organizations.
In September, ASN welcomed Sarah Schra to our Legal & Immigration department as a full-time Immigration Attorney
. Sarah will serve the ASN community by providing immigration legal services, a licensed attorney in Oregon who started her practice in fall of 2025. Sarah graduated with a J.D. from Willamette University College of Law in May 2025 and is awaiting bar exam results. Her professional background prior to attending law school includes serving as a drug addictions counselor for youth, working as an assistant manager for McMenamins Hotel Oregon, providing high level administrative support, graphic design, and marketing, and most recently working for a civil defense law firm in Salem as a paralegal. During law school Sarah was inspired to practice immigration law after spending a summer working in Tanzania and assisting Afghan immigrants in the immigration clinical legal program at Willamette. Sarah is passionate about ensuring that immigrants receive the legal resources they need to transition into a productive life in the United States, and is excited to work alongside her colleagues at ASN to provide support to the Afghan community in Oregon.
Wraparound Case Management:
720 Case Management services were delivered to 110 individuals and families, connecting them with resources such as essential goods, transportation assistance, cultural navigation services, and also developing life navigation plans for them during their formative days in the USA. In addition to this, in response to the freezing of federal resettlement funds, ASN has been working in collaborative efforts with all our partners to support our community through wraparound wraparound & case management services. These services ensured holistic support for families striving toward self-sufficiency and stability.
Cultural Programs & Events:
ASN hosted multiple community gatherings, from Annual Afghan Cultural Celebration 2025, Voices of the Homeland: Poetry Night, Beaverton Welcoming Week 2025, Chai & Paint, to Youth Program expansion, and Job & Resource Fair engaging over 954 participants in activities that nourish community connection and cultural pride. Cultural connection remained the heartbeat of our work:
- Annual Afghan Cultural Celebration 2025: Over 600 attendees gathered at Beaverton City Hall Plaza to celebrate heritage, arts, and unity.

Voices of the Homeland: Poetry Night: 50 participants shared original poetry and reflections in Dari, Pashto, and English.

Chai & Paint: 40 women and girls joined a creative healing session blending art, culture, and community.

Beaverton Welcoming Week 2025: ASN joined citywide efforts to celebrate diversity and inclusion.
Expanding Reach in Salem:
In 2025, ASN officially launched its HRSN (Health-Related Social Needs) Program in Salem, supporting 35+ households with services like housing, nutrition, benefits navigation, and care coordination, marking the beginning of statewide service expansion. We are working on opening our own office space in Salem to further become an address and community hub for our HRSN services for Salem, Eugene area. This is on top of our ongoing wraparound services provision in Salem and the community has been very welcoming and supportive for our initiatives.
Sports & Youth Wellness
The Afghan Sports Commission of Oregon continued to grow, engaging 21 active members in cricket, soccer, and volleyball programs promoting physical wellness, teamwork, and leadership among Afghan youth across Oregon. During the September and going into October 2025, there tryouts scheduled for the soccer & volleyball teams.
What’s Ahead
As we move into the fall of 2025, ASN is scaling up new initiatives across Early Childhood Learning, Cultural & Sports Programming, Digital Literacy, Expansion of services to SW Washington, and Volunteer Development, ensuring Afghan-American families and communities across Oregon & SW Washington continue to thrive with dignity and support.
With the community’s continued trust and participation, we strive to remains a symbol of resilience, compassion, and collective progress for Afghan-American and immigrant communities. The work continues as we aim to empower and uplift the Afghan community through these meaningful programs and services!
