A Journey of Perseverance, Flavor, and Cultural Mashup to Tasty Dumplings

When you step up to Mantu House at 7339 NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, you’re not just encountering a food truck; you’re entering a world of perseverance, tradition, and love wrapped in dumplings. Founded by Afghan immigrant and trailblazer Marzia Hussaini, Mantu House serves up a flavorful menu inspired by her heritage while also paving the way for empowerment and inclusion.

Marzia’s entrepreneurial journey began with a mission—helping her sister, who faced challenges finding a stable job due to language barriers. “I started this business so my sister could stand on her own feet,” shares Marzia. “It’s not just about financial support. It’s about giving her confidence and purpose.”

A Menu with Heart

“Our food is homemade and tastes like home,” Marzia proudly states. The menu at Mantu House is a fusion of Afghan staples and international dumpling dishes, showcasing the diversity of culinary traditions. Here are some highlights:

  1. Mantu Dumplings (Beef or Chicken): Traditional Afghan dumplings filled with savory meat and served with a tangy yogurt sauce and split pea stew.
  2. Ashak: Leek-filled dumplings topped with garlic-yogurt and a tomato meat sauce.
  3. Pelmeni (Beef or Chicken): A nod to Russian cuisine, these dumplings are hearty and flavorful.
  4. Vareniki (Potato or Sweet Cheese): Ukrainian-style dumplings that are soft, comforting, and satisfying.
  5. Beef & Chicken Qabili Palau: Classic Afghan rice dishes bursting with the flavors of raisins, carrots, and tender meat.
  6. Grilled Fish: A lighter, yet equally flavorful option, paired with fresh vegetables.

Marzia emphasizes the authenticity of her food, using Halal-certified ingredients and traditional recipes that reflect Afghan hospitality. The food isn’t just delicious—it’s a cultural experience. Marzia combines her Afghan roots with international flavors, creating a unique culinary experience. “Dumplings are universal—they connect cultures. What we serve isn’t just food; it’s a taste of tradition and innovation,” she explains.

With multiple recommendations and comments on Facebook & Instagram and a 5.0-star rating on Google, Manuto House is loved by all customers and community members have very good things to say about the food.

The Challenges Behind the Scenes

Starting a food truck from scratch wasn’t easy for Marzia. “This was my first experience running a business, and the setup was incredibly hard,” she admits. From navigating plumbing and electrical systems to meeting strict health department standards, the journey was full of hurdles.

Marzia credits Hallen from the Portland Health Department for guiding her through the challenges. “I almost gave up,” she recalls. “But Hallen’s encouragement kept me going.”

Despite the financial struggles and the challenges, Marzia’s hard work has paid off—not just in delicious dishes, but in emotional rewards. “My sister is happy and confident. That alone makes it all worth it and keeps me going,” she shares.

Community Connection and Future Vision

While the broader Oregon community has warmly embraced Mantu House, Marzia hopes to see more Afghan customers discover her food truck. “We’ve had only three Afghan customers so far,” she says. “But the support from others—Russians, locals, and airport visitors—has been incredible.”

Marzia’s vision for the future is ambitious and inspiring:

  • Expanding the menu to include more Afghan dishes.
  • Acquiring advanced food trucks for better service.
  • Opening more locations across Portland.
  • Providing opportunities for women to work and grow.

" As a woman entrepreneur, I want to hire and empower other women!
My message to women is simple: Be strong, fight for your dreams, and you can achieve anything."
